By Susan M Barbey In 2014, I began a one-woman crusade to reform New Jersey’s two death taxes. The result? 1) the NJ Estate Tax of 1934 was repealed on Jan. 1, 2018, and; 2) the NJ Inheritance Tax (NJIT) of 1892 is still on the books. The Inheritance Tax is one that state legislators never talk about in the press. Most people don’t know it exists, and residents can’t fight an invisible enemy. It impacts all New Jersey decedents — poor, middle class and rich. I believed in 2014 and now, that the tax will need to be overturned by the Supreme Court. More on this later.
