Official celebrations for Monday’s national holiday in Germany, the Day of German Unity, opened in the central city of Erfurt on Saturday in the rain and wind. In his capacity as acting president of Germany’s upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, Premier Bodo Ramelow of the state of Thuringia unveiled a redesigned Day of German Unity sign on Cathedral Square, kicking off the three-day celebrations in Thuringia’s state capital.
