Despite criticism, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier says he is still in favour of the idea of a compulsory year of community service. “We need new models in which we can bring young and old into conversation with each other and practice the conviction that we must also be there for others,” Steinmeier told state broadcaster ARD on Sunday.
