Sometimes Wiete struggles with the syllables. Then the word just doesn’t make it past her lips. Wiete is among the estimated 80 million people – or 1% of the population – around the world who stutter. Many who have this condition choose to remain silent. For the 31-year-old, her school years were especially rough. “The others laughed at me and bullied me.” Wiete withdrew, became lonely and only handed in schoolwork in writing.
