Voter turnout in Italy was low in the first hours of parliamentary elections on Sunday, with the country’s right-wing parties predicted to win the vote triggered by the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government. After polls opened at 7 am (0500 GMT), only 19% of eligible voters had cast their ballot by 12 pm, in what looks set to become a new historic low in voter turnout. The midday figure was lower than at the same time in 2018, when Italy recorded its lowest turnout since World War II with some 73% overall, according to the Interior Ministry in Rome.
