The foreign minister of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, has died at the age of 64, state news agency Belta reported on Saturday. The news agency spoke of a “sudden death,” without giving further details. He was not known to have any illnesses. Makei had been foreign minister for 10 years and was one of the confidants of long-term leader Alexander Lukashenko. Before becoming minister, he was head of Lukashenko’s presidential administration. Makei was also considered a possible successor to Lukashenko.
